None of the Puddly Award nominees are very good, but maybe that is a reflection of the state of publishing today. This book has some utility, so it wins!

Our Lady of the Artichokes and Other Portuguese-American Stories
by
Katherine Vaz

"Our Lady of the Artichokes" is a collection of eight short stories, giving an insight into the neglected world of Portuguese-Americans. Katherine Vaz has given us a book of superb writing and vivid portraits of characters whose stories and lives will stay with you. The title story starts "We need to invent us a virgin...."and goes on to detail the search for a miracle that will help pay the rent. Lisbon Story gives the reader insight into the death of a daughter's father, a father who wishes for his daughter a life of sonhos cor-de-rosa, pink dreams. Vaz' writing is perfect for the short story form, full with no excess.

Beginning title of a superb series, excellent writing, clever plot, and an original female character unmatched in modern times.
