Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Alternate Side
by

Although I have never lived in the geography or culture of Anna Quindlen's latest novel, Alternate Side, I can deeply relate to the events and emotional lives of her characters. An enclave in New York City hums along with great normality, including it's adorable, stalwart, and annoying personages and pets. As usually happens in real life, the disruption that upsets everything comes from within, and the fallout happens in stages. While there are lots of surprises, none seem out of character or absurd. Quindlen is a beautiful writer, and I highly recommend her latest, Alternate Side.

Out Stealing Horses
by
Per Petterson

Although I had a negative reaction to the title, the review I read was intriguing. How glad I am that I didn't judge this book "by the cover." Petterson tells an engaging story, from the point of view of an older Trond and his young self. Most of the action occurs in a rural Norway, and is a mix of tragic, heroic, amusing, and romantic moments. Well worth the time to read this short and engaging novel.

Christmas Alphabet Cards
by
Robert Sabuda

These are cards for a collection, not to send, so maybe buy two. Robert Sabuda startles, delights, and enchants with his designs. Whether he is making cards or books, his work is worth the glassed-in bookcase where first editions are kept.
