Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

This Is My Daughter

I won't be giving away the ending to this book as I am not finished with it yet (a couple of chapters to go). I found it very well written and the characters sharply defined. The girls and their interactions rang true as I have two daughters of my own with about the same age differences. The awkwardness of the relations with the previous spouses were also drawn very realistically. All in all I would recommend this book to others and intend to read the author's other works very soon.

I fell in love with this set of books when I saw it on display - I am saving my pennies up to buy it. My two most favorite artists together!

The Ha-Ha

?The Ha Ha? ? the title sounds dumb but it is about a Vietnam Vet that got severely injured on his first 16 days in Vietnam and eventually inherits his parent?s home, never regains the power of speech and lives with three roommates (2 painters and a Vietnamese girl- raised in Texas [platonic]), works for nuns doing landscaping. His high school girlfriend who is an alcoholic checks herself into rehab and drops off her 9 y.o. biracial son (not his) for him to take care of while she?s getting sober. Really well written and the characters are very believable.

I read this book because I have two Latina daughters (I am caucasian). I read 50 pages at the first night and could not put it down. I highly recommend it, especially as an insight into the exodus from Mexico & what drives the Mexican people to try and enter the US again and again in their search for a better life.

Balsamroot A Memoir

I enjoyed this book with it's references to areas in the Northwest that I am acquainted with (i.e., Port Angeles; Lewiston-Clarkston, Moscow) as well as the descriptions of dealing with a loved one in the early and late stages of Alzheimer's. I felt a real empathy with the author and her life struggles as a woman, mother & niece to an ailing aunt. I recommend this book and will be passing it on to my friends.

Digging To America
by

As an adoptive parent of a foreign born child I found this book especially interesting - in fact I had difficulty putting it down and finished it in a record 3 days. I have enjoyed other novels by Anne Tyler but this one was especially interesting as it delved into some of the cultural aspects of the Iranian family and it seemed like the author really understood how it feels to be an adoptive parent. I would highly recommend it to others and especially to people considering adoption. I intend to buy this book to keep (my copy was borrowed).
