This is an amazingly fascinating story that encompasses intricately detailed descriptions of one man's experience in the streets, slums, and criminal element in India, including the ambiance of a variety of environments, the diversity of its inhabitants, and the cultural and emotional lives of the book's characters. This review is based on the unabridged audio book and the narrator, Humphrey Bower, is an amazing actor. He captures each character with authenticity. This book is not for the faint of heart as it is very graphic and explicit. It opened up my mind and eyes, is highly entertaining, and I whole heartedly recommend this book.

I have read this book aloud to my Grade 5 students for two years now, ever since I fell in love with it during the summer and my time off from school. It is an amazingly descriptive story that can open up the world of synesthesia to people who never knew the condition existed. It teaches about empathy, understanding, and problem solving. It can also be used to discuss ethical issues such as lying and cheating. Familial relationships and problems are addressed, as is death of loved ones, friendship, first female-male attraction, internet safety (a bit), and finding out one isn't all alone. Terrific book that I highly recommend - my students do, too.

A different type of story that makes a reader think. Children/young adult readers will most likely find the relationship and reactions between the father and daughter a bit disquieting. (Older "tempermental artist" father who cannot necessarily relate or communicate with a young daughter.) It might make them uncomfortable, but there is a compelling nature to the story that will also encourage them to continue reading. I have recommended this book to students (Grade 5) and the female ones have been more apt to read it and find it mostly thought provoking more than anything else. They loved it for that reason. As an adult, I enjoyed it as well.

A wonderful and touching book that will inspire, comfort, and reassure young and preadolescent girls, especially those who are interested in writing, finding their own voice, have or want to have a best friend, and have familial issues. I am a teacher of Grade 5 students and have recommended the book to several of my female students who absolutely love it!
