Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

All Aunt Hagars Children
by
Edward P Jones
Abby

I absolutely adored Edward P Jones' novel 'the known world' and I can not help but compare this collection to my awe of that book, therefore I found it lacking. If you read this you must read 'the known world'.

I really like Alice Munro but found this collection lacking and shoved together, nothing flowed like I expected it to.

Like Youd Understand Anyway Stories
by
Jim Shepard
Abby
, July 02, 2008
I have read many short story collections and this is definitely in my top five. The stories contain a fantastic array of characters and situations. I thought it was a collection of Jim Shepard's best but it isn't, it is his latest. Very entertaining reading.

Shakespeare's Kitchen
by
Lore Segal

This collection of interrelated stories reads more like a novel than some novels do. The characters are flawlessly built, the setting is perfect and the conversation wonderful. I immediately researched every other Lore Segal book out there, a pure delight to read!

I thoroughly enjoyed these stories by Ann Packer, much more than I have enjoyed her novels. I hope she puts out another collection soon!

Valentines

I love this book. I like every single story in it, which is rare in a short story collection, I usually skip at least a couple. All stories are about couples, couples in some kind of distress and they tend to end far from happy. If you like short stories, you must read this collection.

A wonderfully original subject matter told in a fantastic way, I could relate with this narrator. Jeffrey Eugenides has remarkable talent. I didn't read his first book, The Virgin Suicides, but I am going to now.

Prayer For Owen Meany
by
John Irving
Abby
, September 03, 2007
When someone asks me to recommend them a great book to read my first question is if they have read 'a prayer for owen meany' ... if they haven't read it I recommend they do. I love this book. I read it for the first time in college and have read it every couple of years since. I think it is John Irving at his best. Have you read it? If not, you should!

Fidelity
by
Michael Redhill
Abby
, September 02, 2007
When I think of what the word fidelity means I think of faithfulness and loyalty. I don't think of the other words that fidelity implies, like accuracy or observance and Michael Redhill's collection of short stories does, it tells stories using every meaning very well. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading stories they can easily interject themselves into although most will be glad it isn't their life in the end. I was.

Ideas Of Heaven A Ring Of Stories
by
Joan Silber
Abby
, July 31, 2007
Sometimes you just want to be transported by a story and Joan Silber's 'Ideas of Heaven: A Ring of Stories' does that for you over and over again. One story you are in France, sympathizing with a woman who feels left behind by her husband, next you are in NYC fully understanding why this guy is cheating on the boyfriend he adores. This is the first book by Joan Silber I have read, I will be reading them all very soon.

What The Thunder Said
by
Janet Peery
Abby
, July 20, 2007
This book is fantastic. In true great book fashion it put me in a slower, brooding state of mind, after reading it for an hour I found it hard to bring myself back to reality, in a good way. Rarely am I unable to put a book down but found 'what the thunder said' hard to resist, I had to know what happened to these characters.
