Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Steadfast Tin Soldier
by
Jorg Muller

This is a picture book with absolutely no words yet the description says it's in Chinese. If you are English speaking, don't let that stop you from buying this book for any child you know. Jorg Muller has created a beautiful book here that explains everything your child or grandchild needs to know about a globalized economy. The story goes that some children's toys get swept away in the sewer, maybe in Paris or New York, and end up in a landfill in the developing world far away where they are given a second life. But I mustn't give anything away. The art is wonderful and the concept is brilliant. This book is my favorite children's book. Muller said he wrote it for parents to share with their children. I'm a grandmother who shares it with all the children she knows. I only wish Muller would do some more beautiful books like this.

Two Toms: Lessons from a Shoshone Doctor
by

A young anthropologist assists an aging Shosone doctor on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. This tiny little book is a transcription of the anthropologist's notes from those times--1969. Very charming and filled with Indian wisdom.
