EILEEN COLLINS (b. 1968), the first woman to pilot a space shuttle, is a
lieutenant colonel in the air force. She grew up in Elmira, New York, and
studied at Syracuse University, Stanford, and the Air Force Test Pilot School
at Edwards Air Force Base in California. She was selected to be an astronaut
in 1990 and has logged over four hundred hours in space.*
