Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

It’s been hijacked by the right and abandoned by the left, but the principles of true patriotism — country above self, responsible stewardship, equality, shared sacrifice and service — are inherently progressive. The True Patriot challenges progressives to retake patriotism. Written in the pamphleteering style of Thomas Paine, it presents a manifesto, ten-principal plan, and moral code that reframe the concept of patriotism and return politics to what it once was: a civic virtue and responsibility that fueled the country’s founders.

The True Patriot is a great little pamphlet that reminds us of what our civic duty really is. We owe it to ourselves and our nation to be active participants in the community. We don't get to run away from the echos of our founding fathers' words. We build off the foundation they laid for us.

This little book is a must-read for every American. Liu and Hanauer use the voices of the nation's founders and great leaders, as well as their own, to demonstrate that patriotism is progressive. We can love our nation while we strive to better it. Don't shy away from the word "patriot" -- it's not all about thumping your chest and shouting "love it or leave it!" it's about putting the community of America above oneself and refocusing ourselves on the freedoms and responsibilities that are our core values: equality, stewardship, free worship, free expression... Buy 10 of these books because you're going to want to share it with all your friends.
