Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The first major collection of artwork by the acclaimed movie director David Lynch.

Spanning a period of forty years, David Lynch's widely respected films and television series include Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive. However, his prolific visual art production, which began even before his films, has rarely been seen.

This catalogue of his artistic output, published on the occasion of a large-scale exhibition at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, covers a wide variety of disciplines: painting, photography, drawings, sculpture, furniture, music, and "moving pictures." His art echoes his films in theme and aesthetic, yet offers viewers a fresh and more intimate glimpse into his singular universe. The book also contains several essays that analyze his artworks, as well as a conversation with Lynch, interviewed within the context of the show.

Review:

"[T]ranscribed among the artwork are a conversation on Lynch's art between philosopher Boris Groys and filmmaker Andrei Ujica and an interview with the artist by journalist Kristine McKenna. Those who really can't be bothered to read this text can instead insert the two accompanying CDs and listen to the conversations while contemplating Lynch's artwork." Library Journal

About the Author

Three-time Oscar-nominated director David Lynch is among the leading filmmakers of our era. From the early seventies to the present day, Lynch's popular and critically acclaimed film projects, which include Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive, are internationally considered to have broken down the wall between art-house cinema and Hollywood movie making.

A few months ago, while driving to and from Annapolis, MD from NJ, I listened to both of the CD interviews with Lynch regarding this book. (Two CDs are included as part of the book, the transcriptions of which are partially printed in the book itself. However, I strongly encourage you to listen to the CDs rather than read the transcriptions -- not only because the audio versions contains much more information, but also because hearing Lynch talk about his work is a piece of art in and of itself.)

When I got back from my trip, I settled down and spent five hours pouring over the artwork of David Lynch as presented in this book. Mind-blowing stuff, particularly the sketches and paintings. The photos were less interesting to me.

For fans of Lynch's films, this book is indispensable. It shows you the full range of his creativity outside the medium of film. For art lovers in general, regardless of your impression of David Lynch the director, the works presented in this book will provide you with hours of awe-inspiring viewing pleasure.

Some of these paintings and drawings will take you places you have never been before. Highly, highly recommended!
