Heretic warning: despite accolades & awards, I think this is just a so-so movie. My spouse liked it ... but I didn't. Disclosure: I'm not a cooking fan, nor a Meryl Streep one, and I'm unimpressed with stream-of-consciousness blogging. I had avoided seeing this movie for those reasons: I sensed I had been over-exposed to Meryl, and this film presented Meryl, et al, with a tall order (pun intended). However, I am a writing fan, and it was this theme that keep me in my seat until the end. That said, I never really felt anything in the movie was real. Meryl/Julia's affected speech (even if that accurately depicted Julia's), the attempt by Meryl to portray the tall Julia, Amy Adams' 'bitchy' Julie (especially if that portrayed the 'real' Julie), the thin roles for the 2 male lead/husbands, ... . I didn't relate to any of it ... except the writing. Decent depiction of the rollercoaster ride for writers. If it hadn't been for that, and the Meryl/Julia half, I wouldn't have watched til the end (and you wouldn't have seen this review -- NB: I only rate those books/films that I have finished, and I'm at a point in life where I simply move on to another if I feel it is under par [3]). So, this would have been a 2 without Meryl & co. in her half, a 3 with.
