Cash: The Autobiography

by Johnny Cash

Cash: The Autobiography Cover

Staff Pick

"I keep a close watch on this heart of mine, I keep my eyes wide open all the time..."

Johnny Cash, born John R. Cash (and never given a middle name), was unquestionably one of America's most prolific songwriters and musicians. Born in the farmland of Arkansas (and into poverty), he went on to achieve both popular and critical acclaim, recording over 1,500 songs throughout his career, selling upwards of 50 million albums. His immense influence upon both popular music and the nation at large has been recognized by copious accolades including Kennedy Center Honors, eleven Grammy Awards (as well as the eminent Lifetime Achievement Award), and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Country Music Hall of Fame (the latter he called "the greatest public honor I ever received").

In 1997, six years prior to his death at age seventy-one, Cash published his autobiography. The well-written and engaging book chronicles his early life on the farm, his stint in the Air Force, his influences and initial success, and, of course, the long-fabled adoration he held for his wife, June Carter (to whom he dedicates the autobiography). Along with the illustrious heights to which Cash ascended, he also details the despair, destructive behavior, and drug addiction that quite nearly ended his life.

With this summer's posthumous release of the Rick Rubin-produced American V: A Hundred Highways and the recent biopic Walk The Line, Cash's legacy is enjoying a well-deserved resurgence. This autobiography is a profound glimpse into one of our nation's most revered characters, the Man In Black.

For the more devoted fans of Cash, other titles, such as Cash: An American Man, are must-have books which can only serve to enrich the stature of a man whose legend needs no embellishing.

"...And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away."

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

He is "The Man in Black." Country music legend. The "quintessential American troubadour." An icon of rugged individualism, who's been to hell and back, and tells the tale as never before. In this unforgettable autobiography, Johnny Cash talks straight about the highs and lows, the struggles and hard-won triumphs, and the people who have shaped him.

In his own words, Cash sets the record straight — and dispels a few myths — as he looks unsparingly at his remarkable life: from his turbulent past to the joys of the present to his plans down the road. Here, too, are the friends of a lifetime, including Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Dr. Billy Graham. As powerful and memorable as one of his classic songs, Cash is filled with the candor, wit, and wisdom of a man who has truly "walked the line."

Synopsis:

He was the "Man in Black," a country music legend, and the quintessential American troubadour. He was an icon of rugged individualism who had been to hell and back, telling the tale as never before. In his unforgettable autobiography, Johnny Cash tells the truth about the highs and lows, the struggles and hard-won triumphs, and the people who shaped him.

In his own words, Cash set the record straight — and dispelled a few myths — as he looked unsparingly at his remarkable life: from the joys of his boyhood in Dyess, Arkansas to superstardom in Nashville, Tennessee, the road of Cash's life has been anything but smooth. Cash writes of the thrill of playing with Elvis, the comfort of praying with Billy Graham; of his battles with addiction and of the devotion of his wife, June; of his gratitude for life, and of his thoughts on what the afterlife may bring. Here, too, are the friends of a lifetime, including Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Kris Kristofferson. As powerful and memorable as one of his classic songs, Cash is filled with the candor, wit, and wisdom of a man who truly "walked the line."
