How can you not enjoy a book whose narrator declares on the second page, "Majoring in Art at the state university appealed to me because I have always hated Art, and I had a hunch if any school would treat the subject with the proper disdain, it would be one that was run by the government"? Thus was the pattern set: an audible snicker on every page. The narrator chronicles his first year of college through the lens of his Graphic Design class, skewering along the way not only fraternities, college administrations, and the stereotypes we so quickly apply to anyone unlike ourselves, but also architecture, advertising, and of course, Art. And almost without our noticing, Kidd manages to teach us a little bit about what it means to see.
