The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

by Barbara Robinson

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The Herdmans are the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie, steal, smoke cigars, swear, and hit little kids. So no one is prepared when this outlaw family invades church one Sunday and decides to take over the annual Christmas pageant.

None of the Herdmans has ever heard the Christmas story before. Their interpretation of the tale — the Wise Men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating — has a lot of people up in arms. But it will make this year's pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best one ever.

Review:

"One of the best Christmas books ever."(-- Publishers Weekly)

I discovered this book when I was in elementary school, but I make a point to read it each year. It's a hillarious story about a group of kids who have never heard the Christmas story decide they want to be IN a Christmas pageant. Hillarity ensues as this large family learns about why we celebrate Christmas and about giving to others. The whole Christmas program is turned upside down the year it's taken over by the Herdmans. The mother who was going to offer her baby to play the baby Jesus revokes the offer, and that's just the start of problems. There's the firemen being called for a 'fire' after one of the Herdmans smokes in the bathroom of the church, and so much more! A fast page page turner that will get even the most reluctant reader -- child or adult -- to become a bookworm for an afternoon!

I really like this book, it is humerous and has a great plot. The characters go through many trails to learn what the true christmas story really is.
