This title in other formats:The Porphyrin Handbookby Karl M. Kadish
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Scientists in such fields as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and medicine are currently involved in investigations of porphyrins and their numerous analogues and derivatives. Porphyrins are being used as platforms for the study of theoretical principles, as catalysts, as drugs, as electronic devices, and as spectroscopic probes in biology and medicine. The need for an up-to-date and authoritative treatise on the porphyrin system has met with universal acclaim amongst scientists and investigators.
The Porphyrin Handbook represents a timely publication dealing with the recent chemistry, physics, biology, and medicine of porphyrins and related macrocycles. This publication will be a major reference source in this field for the new millennium.
Key Features
* Editors are world-renowned experts in their particular fields of physical chemistry, bio-organic chemistry, and organometallic chemistry
* Consists of several thousand pages of articles written by internationally recognized experts
* Biological relevance of porphyrins is linked to their chemical, physical, and structural features
* Clear, concise, and uniform presentation with many hundreds of figures, tables and structural formulae
* Of interest to theorists, physicists, chemists, biochemists, biologists, and medical scientists
Book News Annotation:With the enthusiastic blessing of scientists in fields ranging from
mathematics through physics, chemistry, and biochemistry, to biology
and medicine, the editors have consolidated the vast array of
information on porphyrins and related macromolecules into ten volumes
(61 contributed chapters) of clear, concise coverage. The handbook
progresses through synthesis and organic chemistry of porphyrins,
heteroporphyrins, and expanded porphyrins, to inorganic and
coordination chemistry, and then through biochemistry and
spectroscopy, to applications and theoretical, physical, and
electrochemical characterization. The last two volumes contain useful
databases of redox potentials, binding constants, and tetrapyrrole
crystal structure determinations. The editors, who are
internationally known in the fields of physical chemistry,
bio-organic chemistry, and organometallic chemistry—and who have
published 1,220 papers among them—took care to ensure that every
chapter was written by the currently acknowledged expert in the
field. Thus, the book boasts such porphyrin superstars as Abhik Ghosh
(chapter 47, Quantum Chemical Studies of Molecular Structures and
Potential Energy Surfaces of Porphyrins and Hemes) and co-editor
Kevin M. Smith (chapters 1 and 3), who authored the precursor to this
handbook, Porphyrins and Metalloporphyrins (1975). Although the
manuscript deadline was October 1998, some updates stretched into
1999 (even up to the page-proof stage); but officially, coverage and
literature citations are up-to-date through the end of 1998.
Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Review:"This valuable series gathers together world-renowned experts in porphyrin research to discuss the chemistry, physics, biology, and medicine of porphyrins and related macrocycles. Comprehensive coverage extends through 1998... with some literature citations from 1999... As the editors state in the preface, however, "we asked each of the authors to write a manuscript which would be the definitive in this field for fifteen years to come, and we believe that most of them, if not all, rose to this challenge." - Journal of the American Chemical Society, Volume 122, Number 16, April 26, 2000 "I have, at times, had people lined up to get at my volumes of The Porphyrin Handbook. Quite popular. People I don't know wander in to take a look and some hang around for quite a while. I put a couch in a public area outside my office to handle the traffic." - Professor Thomas L. Poulos, University of California, Irvine Review:"This valuable series gathers together world-renowned experts in porphyrin research to discuss the chemistry, physics, biology, and medicine of porphyrins and related macrocycles.
