Bethany Moreton: IMG Culture War on Aisle 5? Wal-Mart, Evangelicals, and "Extreme Capitalism"

"In the 'culture wars' narrative of the Republican ascendancy, this slippage represents the greatest con in recent history: while you rush to defend marriage or protect the unborn, please pay no attention to the financier behind the curtain." Continue »

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The last priest is on the run. During an anti-clerical purge in one of the southern states of Mexico, he is hunted like a hare. Too human for heroism, too humble for martyrdom, the little worldly 'whisky priest' is nevertheless impelled towards his squalid Calvary as much by his own compassion for humanity as by the efforts of his pursuers. A baleful vulture of doom hovers over this modern crucifixion story, but above the vulture soars an eagle — the inevitability of the Church's triumph.

Review:

"The Power and the Glory's nameless whisky priest blends seamlessly with his tropical, crooked, anticlerical Mexico. Roman Catholicism is intrinsic to the character and terrain both; Greene's imaginative immersion in both is triumphant." John Updike in his Introduction

Synopsis:

In a poor, remote section of southern Mexico, the Red Shirts have taken control. God has been outlawed, and the priests have been systematically hunted down and killed. Now, the last priest strives to overcome physical and moral cowardice in order to find redemption.

The title of the Power and the Glory is symbolic as it attracts the reader to the main idea that is to be expected throughout the novel. Greene is a master of writing, he sets up the reader with such a simple title as this. the main question throughout the novel is, who has the power? who has the glory? are these entities tangible and can be owned? can two person equally hold these two entity? and whether or not these entities can be owned. The squalid lieutenant wants the power for himself, as he views the power as tangible, while the unamed priest states that he does not have the power as it is reserved for god.... for futher information contact me at email above.
