This is a fabulous book for all ages. We have an ancient cherished copy given to my mother when she was a child shortly after it was published. I read it aloud every Christmas. I am thrilled it is back in print and shall buy several copies for friends. It is an entrancing and uplifting story with strong and attractive characters. A good one for 'tomboys' everywhere. Its' vivid romantic descriptions of prewar Hungary have stayed with me all my life. An unqualified recommendation. Lucinda Kowol Oxford UK

This is a wonderful book about life in pre WWI Hungary. Kate arrives to the countryside, and is very unmanagable. She gets into many scrapes and adventures, but eventually becomes a lady. This should be required reading in every elementary school. It's a memorable story which could be beloved by both children and adults if it were just more well known.
