If Carl Hiaasen set one of his novels on a residential stretch of boundary line between British Columbia and Washington, or if Richard Russo's characters had relatives in the Pacific Northwest, the result might be something like Jim Lynch's Border Songs. Continue »

Synopses & Reviews

Synopsis:

Many of Ian Fleming's short stories have been the inspiration for the extremely successful James Bond film franchise, and included in this collection are such stories as "Octopussy," "The Living Daylights," and "For Your Eyes Only." The title story, "Quantum of Solace," lends its name to the James Bond film.

About the Author

Ian Fleming (1908-1964), the creator of the world's best known secret agent, joined Naval Intelligence and served throughout World War II, finally earning the rank of commander. Much of the James Bond material was drawn directly from Fleming's experiences as an intelligence officer.

Re-released to coincide with the new Bond film, "Quantum of Solace" collects all of Fleming's short Bond stories, previous found in "Octopussy" and "For Your Eyes Only." The oddly titled "Quantum of Solace" is a dull, uninspired story that only shares a title with the film. In fact, many of the stories simply provided titles ("Octopussy," "A View to a Kill") for the films, rather than plots. While it is convenient to have them all in one volume, none are particularly notable and many are outright boring. The completist will be pleased, while the casual reader may want to stick with earlier novels such as "Dr. No" and "Live and Let Die." What is a quantum, by the way?
