Bethany Moreton: IMG Culture War on Aisle 5? Wal-Mart, Evangelicals, and "Extreme Capitalism"

"In the 'culture wars' narrative of the Republican ascendancy, this slippage represents the greatest con in recent history: while you rush to defend marriage or protect the unborn, please pay no attention to the financier behind the curtain." Continue »

Operas of Verdi Volume 3: From Don Carlos to Falstaff, Revised Edition

by Julian Budden

Operas of Verdi Volume 3: From Don Carlos to Falstaff, Revised Edition Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Volume Three covers roughly a quarter of a century, a period which saw grand opera on the Parisian model established throughout Italy, the reform of the Conservatories, and the spread of cosmopolitan influences to an extent that convinced many that Italian music was losing its identity. Verdi produced his four last and greatest operas--Don Carlos, Aida, Otello, and Falstaff--in this period, which ended with the advent of "verisimo", in which a new, recognizably Italian idiom was inaugurated.

Review:

Praise for the first edition:

"Anyone wishing to understand the psychodynamics of [charismatic groups] should pick up Cults....[Galanter] has been a student of cult-like activity for the better part of two decades; this book represents a thoughtful and provocative summation of what he has learned."--Mark Silk, The New York Times

Book Review.

"[Galanter] encourages us to think carefully about the extent to which our society can tolerate pluralism, innovation, and 'deviance.'...Galanter's approach gives us an urgently needed framework that can improve the quality of discussions about cults."--The Christian Century
