Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

On a hot summer afternoon in 1972, three teenagers drove into an unfamiliar neighborhood and six lives were altered forever.

Thirty five years later, one survivor of that day reaches out to another, opening a door that could lead to salvation. But another survivor is now out of prison, looking for reparation in any form he can find it.

The Turnaround takes us on a journey from the rock-and-soul streets of the '70s to the changing neighborhoods of D.C. today, from the diners and auto garages of the city to the inside of Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital, where wounded men and women have returned to the world in a time of war. A novel of fathers and sons, wives and husbands, loss, victory and violent redemption, The Turnaround is another compelling, highly charged novel from George Pelecanos, "the best crime novelist in America." (Oregonian)

Review:

"In yet another gem of urban noir, bestseller Pelecanos (The Night Gardener) explores the possibility of making 'the turnaround,' of starting over and building a new life, regardless of the past. One summer day in 1972, three teenage white boys — Alex Pappas and his friends Billy Cachoris and Pete Whitten — drive into a poor Washington, D.C., neighborhood, high on booze and weed, looking for trouble. They confront three young black men, Billy winds up dead and Alex badly beaten. In 2007, Alex runs the family coffee shop, as did his father, and grieves for his son, recently killed in Iraq. Then, one of the black survivors of 'the incident' contacts Alex, opening a door that may finally put the trauma of the past to rest. At the same time, another survivor, the man who beat Alex, has gotten out of prison and has extortion on his mind. The result is a beautifully written and thought-provoking novel of crime, friendship, aging and redemption." Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

George Pelecanos' fine new novel continues the remarkable portrait of this city he has been producing for the past 16 years. "The Turnaround" is his 15th novel and probably his most accessible. The unnerving violence, often drug-related, that marked many of his earlier books is muted here. The story begins with a racially inspired murder, but in time the old hatreds give way to a quest for forgiveness.... Washington Post Book Review (read the entire Washington Post review)

Review:

"As always, Pelecanos combines generosity of soul with scrupulous attention to detail and an acute sensitivity to the complicated dance of friendship and antagonism between people whose faces wear different colors. A virtue of this fine novel is the author's evident love for his characters, even the lost ones. Enthusiastically recommended." Library Journal

Review:

"Pelecanos does what few, if any, American writers do: He tells the truth....Pelecanos' truth is from deep in the heart, from places where red blood cells know more than all the sweet, heady words truth usually hides behind. His truth is love-based and whispers secrets in your ear." Chicago Sun-Times

Review:

"[An] absorbing story likely to burnish [Pelecanos's] reputation with his loyal fans and expose him to a wider audience." Bookreporter.com

This is the first George Pelecanos novel I’ve read. Based on the fact that I couldn’t put it down I will be reading his other novels. This compelling story begins with a dramatic event on a single day in the summer of 1972 then picks up 35 years later with the surviving participants. Not only are you able to follow the transformation of those involved on that pivotal day but you will also witness the history of Washington, D.C. itself a significant character in this novel.
