About the Author

Dr. Frederic (Ric) Martini received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in comparative and functional anatomy for work on the pathophysiology of stress. His publications include journal articles and contributed chapters, technical reports, and magazine articles. He is the lead author of six other undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology or anatomy, and has a feature column, “Back to Basics,” in Physician License and Practice Today, a quarterly publication for medical students and residents. He is currently affiliated faculty of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and remains connected with the Shoals Marine Laboratory, a joint venture between Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Martini has been active in the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) for 15 years, and was a member of the committee that established the course curriculum guidelines for AandP. He is now a President Emeritus of HAPS after serving as President-Elect, President, and Past-President over 2004—2007. He is also a member of the American Physiological Society, the American Association of Anatomists, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, the Australia/New Zealand Association of Clinical Anatomists, the Hawaii Academy of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the International Society of Vertebrate Morphologists.

 

Dr. Michael J. Timmons received his degrees from Loyola University, Chicago. For more than three decades he has had a strong commitment to teaching nursing and pre-professional students at Moraine Valley Community College. In 2005—2006 Professor Timmons was honored with the Professor of the Year Award by Moraine Valley College and the Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development for his outstanding contributions to teaching, leadership, and student learning. He was the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award by the Illinois Community College Board of Trustees. Professor Timmons has authored several anatomy and physiology lab manuals and dissection guides. His areas of interest include biomedical photography, crafting illustration programs, and developing instructional technology learning systems. He chaired the Midwest Regional Human Anatomy and Physiology Conference and is also a national and regional presenter at the League for Innovation Conferences on Information Technology for Colleges and Universities and at Human Anatomy and Physiology Society meetings.

 

Dr. Robert B. Tallitsch received his Ph.D. in physiology with an anatomy minor from the University of Wisconsin–Madison at the ripe old age of 24. Since then, Dr. Tallitsch has been on the biology faculty at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. His teaching responsibilities include Human Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Histology, and Kinesiology. He is also a member of the Asian Studies faculty atAugustana College and teaches a course in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In seven out of the last nine years, Dr. Tallitsch has been designated as one of the “unofficial teachers of the year” by the graduating seniors at Augustana College. Dr. Tallitsch is a member of the American Physiological Society, American Association of Anatomists, AsiaNetwork, and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at Augustana College, Dr. Tallitsch has served as a visiting faculty member at the Foreign Languages Faculty at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology (Beijing, PRC), and the Foreign Languages Faculty at Central ChinaNormalUniversity (Wuhan, PRC).
