Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Jack Tannis ended his day like any other. Then the phone rang. The caller, who would not give his name, teased him with another: David Harper.

Suddenly, Tannis was thrust back to his days as security director at China Lake, the U.S. Naval Weapons Center. In 1961, duplicates of the first heat-seeking air-to-air missile, the Sidewinder, began appearing on Soviet MIG fighters. British scientist David Harper was accused of revealing its design to the Russians. Jack Tannis cleared his name. The case was never solved.

With dizzying speed the past comes back to life...a body found in the night desert...a special navy team rushed in to investigte the murder...a beautiful woman's mysterious outpost in the desert...and David Harper, the key to everything, joining Tannis to ferret out the force behind the secret that started it all....

Review:

"[I]t is Hyde's evocation of the unforgiving desert, especially its forbiddingly dark nights, that lifts the novel far above conventional suspense fiction." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"One of the brightest, freshest new voices to appear in the international thriller business in a long time." USA Today

If anyone is familiar with this area then they would find this book very nostalgic. The author apparently knew the area well. The story line is interesting, the description of the area is spot on. I found it interesting that the writer even knew many of the Naval base secrets and the local gossip. Very well written book that takes me back to the days when I ventured into the desert, played with my dune buggie out in the hills, drag raced at the Inyokern airport, brought meals out to a lonely fiance stuck way out in the some secured area because he worked as a gate guard. The author knows how to have fun with his descriptions of an area that has so many mysteries.. I wonder if he trumped into those same hills, or if like Tannis he secretly resided in the area. Trust me when I say the truth is that China Lake Naval weapons center is a base with many mysteries.
