In this modern fantasy science fiction novel, the protagonist, 12-year-old Jonas, who has been chosen to be the receiver of the memories, becomes disillusioned about the perfect, utopian society in which he lives. A casual murderous act on the part of his beloved and respected father ensures Jonas' change of heart. On the surface, this society appears to be easy, comfortable, and efficient. However, appearances can be deceiving; Jonas finds out first-hand that the price for perfection is too high. Jonas cannot bear it, and he makes a difficult choice--with the blessings of "the Giver" he forges a new path that will seal his fate forever. Jonas exemplifies courage, kindness, and herioism through the hardships he endures on his journey to the quest. Readers may live vicariously through this unlikely hero and come to realize the attributes they must have to live a moral and ethical life themselves.
