Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

"How Humans Evolved" uses the broad perspective of behavioral ecology, drawing on Robert Boyd's expertise in evolutionary theory and Joan Silk's specialty in primate behavior in a uniquely integrative text

Book News Annotation:

For undergraduates, Boyd and Silk (both: anthropology, UCLA) provide an introduction to human evolution using paleontology, evolutionary theory, population genetics, and behavioral ecology. They describe adaptation, natural selection, genetics, speciation and phylogeny, primate ecology and behavior, mating, social behavior, intelligence, human lineage, genetic diversity, mate choice, and parenting. The new edition omits the readings and the chapters on language and the human life cycle. Other chapters have been expanded and updated to reflect new research. A CD-ROM guide to the fossil record accompanies the book.

Synopsis:

Robert Boyd and Joan B. Silk bring their respective specialties to the groundbreaking Fourth Edition of How Humans Evolved. Using the broad perspective of behavioral ecology-how human behavior has been influenced by the evolutionary process-the authors offer a balanced discussion, drawing on updated coverage of the human fossil record. The well-structured pedagogical framework of the text, with its emphasis on overarching ideas, makes the material accessible to introductory students.
