Bethany Moreton: IMG Culture War on Aisle 5? Wal-Mart, Evangelicals, and "Extreme Capitalism"

"In the 'culture wars' narrative of the Republican ascendancy, this slippage represents the greatest con in recent history: while you rush to defend marriage or protect the unborn, please pay no attention to the financier behind the curtain." Continue »

Publisher Comments:

NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas keeps the streets of a near-future New York City safe in this extraordinary series. But even she makes mistakes, and is haunted by those she couldn't save — and the killers she couldn't capture. When the body of a young brunette is found in East River Park, artfully positioned and marked by signs of prolonged and painful torture, Eve is catapulted back to a case nine years earlier. The city was on edge from a killing spree that took the lives of four women in fifteen days, courtesy of a man the media tagged The Groom — because he put silver rings on the fingers of his victims.

When it turns out that the young brunette was employed by Eve's billionaire husband, Roarke, she brings him in on the case-a move that proves fitting when it becomes chillingly clear that the killer has made his attack personal. The victim was washed in products from a store Roarke owns, and laid out on a sheet his company manufactures.

With the Groom's monstrous return, Eve is determined to finish him once and for all. Familiar with his methods, Eve knows that he has already grabbed his next victim. Time is running out on another woman's life.

And chances are he's working up to the biggest challenge of his illustrious career — abducting a woman who will test his skills and who promises to give him days and days of pleasure before she dies: Eve.

Review:

"At 27 books and counting, Nora Roberts is more prolific under her Robb pseudonym than most authors manage in a single career. Yet the latest in her not-so-near-future detective series featuring New York Police Det. Eve Dallas offers a satisfyingly novel mlange of suspense, sex, forensics and heroics. It's 2060, and the serial killer nicknamed 'The Groom' is back in town after an absence of nine years, resuming his horrific run of kidnapping, torturing and killing young women. Dallas, who served as a detective in the frustrating first investigation, assumes lead role in this one. This time, not only do the killer's chosen victims have ties to Dallas's husband, Roarke, but Dallas herself may be the killer's ultimate target. Swiftly paced, the story cuts frequently from the investigation to the killer's 'progress' with his victims. Dallas works to outplan, outfight and outsmart the killer; to keep her handsome, rich husband happy; and to be ready for the next round after a good night's sleep. Robb's latest is bound to please Dallas fans." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

In this latest offering in JD Robb's ...In Death series, the focus is on Eve Dallas' professional life as she battles a murderer with ties to the Urban Wars as well as the fine arts. A more cultured and less romantic offering, the finer points of Eve's relationship with her mentor, partner, and other coworker are examined. For those who appreciate the mystery aspect of the ...In Death series, this will certainly NOT disappoint.

Finally, the focus is back on the crime fighting Eve with her husband as sidekick. While I wouldn't miss any of the installments in their developing married life, this time we once again see Eve in action, but as her husband views it from "behind the scenes".
A "cold case" from Eve's history becomes active and this time she won't let the killer get away. The interactions with her trainer, now friend and computer expert police captain are compelling.
Don't miss it!
