Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

At the Church of Fire and Brimstone and Gods Almighty Baptizing Wind, Grandpa Herman makes the rules for everyone, and everyone obeys, or else. Try as she might, Ninah hasn't succeeded in resisting temptation her prayer partner, James and finds herself pregnant. She fears the wrath of Grandpa Herman, the congregation and of God Himself. But the events that follow show Ninah that Gods ways are more mysterious than even Grandpa Herman understands.

Review:

"While many of the issues Reynolds deals with are coming-of-age staples...her gift for characterization ultimately transcends the material as Ninah's strength and resilience enable her to move beyond benighted religiosity toward a true and lasting faith." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"Reynolds lives up to the praise garnered by her first novel, Bitterroot Landing." Library Journal

Synopsis:

From the author of Bitterroot Landing--hailed by the Richmond State as "a splendid contribution to Southern literature"--comes a stunning story woven around the themes of innocence and miracles in everyday life. When the granddaughter of the founder of an isolated religious community in South Carolina is discovered to be pregnant, no amount of punishment will make her recant her statement that a holy child grows inside her.

About the Author

Reynolds teaches writing and literature at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.

I am 18 years old and I hate reading honestly but when I picked up this book for a English 351 class it was no more of an obligation for me it was an adventure and I shared my thoughts on this book with all my religious friends. - Jennifer

I couldn't put this book down. It's a coming of age story about a girl who's involved in a cult-like church. It's so masterfully written that I almost thought it was real, and it moved me to tears.
