Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Many Washington insiders believe that the strength of the Bush machine lies not in its leader but in Karl Rove, the man who picked Bush to run for Governor of Texas, tutored him on the workings of government, and ran brilliant yet brutal campaigns that would eventually sweep Bush into the Presidency.

In Bush's Brain readers will enter the powerful world of White House Senior Advisor Karl Rove and learn how this man created George W. Bush and continues to keep him on top. Political journalists James Moore and Wayne Slater offer a rare glimpse into the man who has become the single most important advisor to George W. Bush — and the person who many think is calling the shots at the White House. They also discuss how Rove's strategic decisions seem to be determining U.S. policy for the Bush administration, including the now fatal decision to back away from Mideast negotiations. This intriguing book also features previously unreported information on the Bush campaign — from the primaries and the conventions to the fall general election and the complex relationship Rove and Bush currently share.

Karl Rove is both feared and admired by Republicans and Democrats alike. His take no prisoners approach to politics has received mixed reviews and left everyone wondering — who's really running this country? In Bush's Brain readers will learn who the real Karl Rove is and just how much power he really has.

Review:

"The authors' line on Rove is by now conventional wisdom, but they bring it to life with a wealth of detail, painting nuanced character studies of Rove, the driven intellectual with an abrasive edge and an iron will to win, and Bush, the callow anti-intellectual with a charming air and a need for discipline and a game plan." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"The second, and more substantial, of the recent books about Bush's longtime political partner, Karl Rove." Austin American Statesman

Review:

"Love him or hate him, Karl Rove is one of the most brilliant and successful political consultants of all time. In this riveting account, Wayne Slater and Jim Moore tell how he got there." Paul Begala, CNN's Crossfire

Review:

"Bush's Brain isn't a hatchet job on George W. Bush. In fact, the two authors largely dispel the myth of Bush's supposedly deficient IQ. But, more importantly, they lay bare the story of how Karl Rove may be the most powerful man in America. It's a compelling story told by two veteran Texas journalists who don't need a briefing packet to understand the men they're writing about." Philip Bruce, KCET/PBS Television, Los Angeles

"If you want to understand the President’s underlying motives, read the new book on his guru, Karl Rove, Bush’s Brain."

–Al Hunt, The Wall Street Journal

"Bush’s Brain, by James Moore and Wayne Slater, two experienced Texas reporters who have covered the pair for many years, has fresh information about Rove’s influence on Bush . . . Moore and Slater think that Rove is a dangerous man, but their book is not biased or malicious, based as it is in solid reporting."

The most powerful individual in the United States may not be George W. Bush. It is probably Karl Rove, the President's brilliant advisor. Who is this man and how did he acquire so much power? Having watched in awe for over fifteen years as they reported on the rise of Karl Rove, Moore and Slater expose the brutal and sometimes morally questionable, but invariably effective ways in which Karl Rove?and America's political system—actually operate.
