Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Featuring unique NEW study tools for students and dynamic NEW lecture resources for instructors, the 13th Edition of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY takes this brilliant bestseller to new heights in addressing the challenges of today's classroom. The most widely read history of art in the English language for more than 80 years, GARDNER has built its stellar reputation on the inclusion of the most significant images and monuments, discussions of these images in their full historical and cultural context, reproductions of unsurpassed quality, scholarship that is up-to-date and deep, and more help for students and instructors than any other survey text. The 13th Edition adds to this heritage with new images and new full-color reconstructions. Students will also benefit from the clarity that only a book written by a single author can provide, as well as from "The Big Picture" overviews at the end of every chapter, and ArtStudy Online (a free interactive study guide that includes image flashcards and quizzes to help students master the material quickly). Dynamic lecture tools—including a digital library with a full "zoom" and side-by-side comparison capability and the exciting Google Earth technology—will save instructors time in preparing for class and personalizing their lectures. Book News Annotation:Notable to the 13th edition of this celebrated textbook is the
upgrading of a large percentage of the images around which the text
is based. Professors accustomed to the 12th edition will be relieved
to learn that the content and its organization have not been altered.
The volume includes online access to a site where students can find
flashcards, visual compare and contrast examples, links to Google
earth coordinates, interactive maps, video clips, and practice tips,
among other study aids. The art of western Europe, which was the
basis for the original Gardner History, is now interspersed with
chapters on the art and architecture of South and Southeast Asia,
China and Korea, Japan, Oceania, Africa, the Islamic world, and
Native American art. Many maps and inset boxes, as well as an
accompanying fold-out timeline are included. Earlier editions are
cited in Resources for College Libraries.
Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Review:"The writing is snappy and engaging, the content is excellent with substantial contextual information including patronage and reception, and the "boxed information" is useful and not just flashy graphics to make the book seem interesting and trendy." Review:"The superior quality of its photos and illustrations is one of the principal reasons that the Department of Art History has consistently used Art through the Ages." Review:"Three strengths of Gardner's are: the choice of imagery discussed; the quality and size of the images, and the clarity; and detail of the discussion which includes a strong balance between style and history." Synopsis:As fascinating as a real visit to the world's famous museums and architectural sites, GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY gives you a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated tour of the world's great artistic traditions—plus all the study tools you need to excel in your art history course! Easy to read and understand, this 13th Edition of the most widely read history of art book in the English language is the only textbook that includes a unique "scale" feature (accompanying the book's photographs of paintings and other artworks) that will help you better visualize the actual size of the artworks shown in the book. You'll also find materials that will help you master the key topics quickly and help you study for your exams—for example, "The Big Picture" overviews at the end of every chapter, a special global timeline, and ArtStudy Online (a free interactive study guide that includes flash cards of images and quizzes).
