Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:In FAMILY THERAPY: AN OVERVIEW, SEVENTH EDITION, Irene and Herbert Goldenberg deliver an outstanding introduction to family therapy?based on traditional theoretical frameworks yet focused on the field's evolving models of practice. Completely updated and revised to reflect the state of family therapy today, the book examines and explains traditional and evolving viewpoints, perspectives, values, intervention techniques, and goals of family therapy and provides current, engaging, practice-oriented content that helps pave the way for students to become empathic and effective family therapists. The authors incorporate an array of pedagogical features, including lengthy case studies, clinical notes, multiple examples, tables, and charts that give instructors the flexibility to teach the course in their own style. These learning tools give added significance to topics and help students gain a sense of how the various family therapy techniques truly play out in practice. The case studies bring theory to life with transcripts of actual therapy sessions that demonstrate the practical applications of specific theories. FAMILY THERAPY: AN OVERVIEW is the complete resource for assisting students in mastering the many facets of family therapy and with new teaching tools, a more comprehensive and exciting package for instructors. Michael White, founder of Narrative Therapy, penned the foreword for the text. Book News Annotation:First published in 1980, this updated textbook--now in its seventh
edition--provides an overview of the major theoretical underpinnings
of family therapy and describes current clinical practices. Clinical
cases illustrate the application of a particular set of techniques
for each of the established schools of family therapy. Newer models,
such as the social constructionist views, are also discussed. The
volume concludes with a comparative overview of family theories and
therapies.
Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Review:"The Goldenbergs do a wonderful job in creating a balanced presentation of family therapy approaches. I was initially introduced to the works of the Goldenbergs in my own graduate studies many years ago. It provided me with a wonderful introduction to family therapy approaches as a beginning clinician. Now that I am a "seasoned" family therapist and a full time professor, I want my students to learn from the best!" Review:"I have closely reviewed this textbook and love it. It is clearly written and is perfect for our first year graduate students." Review:Key strengths include: "a more comprehensive section on narrative therapy, cultural diversity was incorporated well, online/internet component, and enrichment workbook." Review:"The chapters on the schools of family therapy are very effective: clear, well-organized, up-to-date, and accompanied by helpful examples and tables."
