Deception on His Mind

by Elizabeth George

Deception on His Mind Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Balford-le-Nez is a dying seatown on the coast of Essex. But when a member of the town's small but growing Asian community, is found dead on its beach, his neck broken, sleepy Balford-le-Nez ignites. Working solo, without her long-time partner Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, Sergeant Barbara Havers must probe not only the mind of a murderer and a case very close to her own heart, but the terrible price people pay for deceiving others...and themselves.

Review:

"Working-class Sergeant Havers is away from her aristocratic boss Lynley as she uncovers racism and murder in the killing of a Pakistani man at a British seaside resort. Superb characters, rich plotting and enough length let the reader become part of it all." Michele Ross, The Christian Science Monitor

Review:

"One of George's best...insightful, tense and compassionate." Entertainment Weekly

Review:

"Deception falls smartly into place in [George's] literate, impassioned series, one of today's best." Chicago Tribune

Review:

"George's novel is admirable — elegant in its architecture and satisfying in its resolution." Wall Street Journal

Review:

"This is an unusually elaborate and intricate mystery, but George keeps an unrelenting grip on her readers as the police constantly shift their focus among a dozen well-drawn suspects." Publisher's Weekly

Review:

"The plot is well developed, the red herrings many and varied, and the social commentary on the racial unease in England is well handled. Havers emerges as a more sympathetic character here, and readers get the feeling she is beginning to 'get a life.'" Susan H. Woodcock, School Library Journal
