Unlike other books on writing that seem to off up a prescription for writing, King's book acts as more of an inspiration or at least as the kick I needed to start taking myself more seriously as a writer.

If you are a Stephen King fan and want to know more about how he writes, you should read this book.
If you're a Stephen King fan and you're interested in reading about his life (and about the accident that almost took his life), you should read this book.
Even if you don't necessarily care about Stephen King, but you're interested in writing, you should read this book.
I'm all of the above, and love this book, but I think you can still be NONE of the above and enjoy it -- give it a try!

This sort of feels like two or three short pieces smushed together into one book, which I suppose it is. It's part autobiography, part writing manual, and it sort of suffers from its split personality. On the other hand, the advice King gives to writers just starting out is very, very good, and he manages to discuss such mundanities as grammar and how to write a cover letter to an agent with humor.
