Kate Howard is feeling very nervous on her first day at the Barleybridge Veterinary Practice, but she soon finds herself flung headlong into the hurly-burly of a busy clinic and loving it. Amongst the patients she meets are Myfanwy the sheep who arrives wearing a collar and lead, the elderly Cherub, a seriously ill cat, and Adolf the Rottweiler. The staff are friendly and welcoming, particularly Scott, the Australian vet. But Kate already has a boyfriend, Adam, whose charms do not compete with Scott's. When she tells Adam their friendship is over, his threats become very real and he begins stalking her...
