It's the most fun you'll have with just 16 cards. Yep. Sixteen cards. Each player starts with one card; on their turn, they draw one card and decide which of their two cards they want to play, using that card's action. Last player standing wins the round. That's it. Give this game a shot, you'll... love it.
Recommended by Gary Lee, Powells.com

Love Letter Card Game is one of those games that is easy to learn, fun to pick up, and the perfect transition game when you need a break between Twilight Imperium and Arkham Horror. For two to four players, each round lasts until only one player is left standing or the deck is exhausted. Equal parts luck and strategy and lasting only about 30 minutes, both the novice and expert gamer will find something to enjoy.

Publisher Comments:

In the wake of the queen's arrest, all the eligible young men of Tempest (and many not so young) seek to woo Princess Annette. Unfortunately, she has locked herself in the palace, and everyone must rely on those within the palace to bring their romantic letters to her. Will yours reach her first?

Love Letter is a game of risk, deduction, and luck, for 2-4 players. Get your love letter into Princess Annette's hands while keeping other players' letters away. Powerful cards lead to early gains, but make you a target. Rely on weaker cards for too long and your letter may be tossed in the fire!

16 Game Cards
4 Reference Cards
13 tokens of affection

Players: 2-4
Game Time: 15-20 minutes
Ages: 8 and up
Complexity: Low

Luck: Moderate

If you're looking for a cheap, easy to learn and quick card game, this is the one. There are only 16 cards in the deck and you only have one card in your hand each turn. On your turn, you draw one card and then choose which of the two you want to play. Your goal is to have the highest ranking card at the end of the game so you receive a token of affection from a princess who has locked herself away in a room ... the whole story is in the rule book (the original game came from Japan but this American version features characters and theme based on the company's other games - you can also buy the original Japanese version with different artwork but the same rules). After each round, the winner receives a small red cube (included with the game) and play continues until someone collects a set number of cubes. Games last 10 minutes at the longest and it's a great game while you're waiting on dinner or as a "palate cleanser" between longer or deeper games. The rules say this game is for two to four players but it is definitely best with 3-4.

NOTE: The romantic theme might not appeal to some players (i.e. - males, primarily) and there is another game by the same designer called Lost Legacy: The Starship (along with the expansion Lost Legacy: Flying Garden and the upcoming Lost Legacy: Whitegold Spire) with a sci-fi theme and slightly more depth that is really great, too.
