If Carl Hiaasen set one of his novels on a residential stretch of boundary line between British Columbia and Washington, or if Richard Russo's characters had relatives in the Pacific Northwest, the result might be something like Jim Lynch's Border Songs. Continue »

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Now in its fourth edition, this leading text has been extensively revised to reflect the sweeping changes the past decade have brought to Europe and to incorporate new research in the field. Employing a richly topical rather than a mechanistic region-by-region approach, the book simultaneously presents the overarching unity of Europe as a human entity and its underlying internal diversity. Inclusive, intellectual, rich in ideas, lively, controversial, humanistic, and above all interesting, The European Culture Area is the text of choice for courses on the geography of Europe. This book is the perfect companion for anyone taking a geography class or just looking to expand their knowledge of some basic things that make Europe the distinct culture area that it is,as well as where cultural and religious divides occur within this area and what has contributed to these internal rifts.Helpful pictures and maps are found throughout the book as it covers a multitude of relevant topics from geopolitics to economics,as well as geolinguistics, history, and statistical information among other things for different regions.I decided to hold on to my copy of this even after the class I needed it for ended;a very practical book, detailed and informative, and reading it is sure to give one that 'worldly, informed' feeling.
