Book News Annotation:White (1720-93) is thought of today as more of a literary figure than
a scientist, and his research tends to be either ignored entirely or
denigrated. British historian Dadswell sets out to correct the
impression by showing that he was in fact a careful, systematic, and
thoughtful naturalist who stood out from others of his time. He culls
from his writings information about nature as an economy, the
disappearing swallows, the problem of adaptation, and other matters.
He appends five relevant papers and extracts.
