Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

I am dying: it's a beautiful word. Like the long slow sigh of a cello: dying. But the sound of it is the only beautiful thing about it.

As life slips away, Gabriel looks back over his brief twenty years, which have been clouded by frustration and humiliation. A small, unforgiving town and distant, punitive parents ensure that he is never allowed to forget the horrific mistake he made as a child. He has only two friends — his dog, Surrender, and the unruly wild boy, Finnigan, a shadowy doppelganger with whom the meek Gabriel once made a boyhood pact. But when a series of arson attacks grips the town, Gabriel realizes how unpredictable and dangerous Finnigan is. As events begin to spiral violently out of control, it becomes devastatingly clear that only the most extreme measures will rid Gabriel of Finnigan for good.

Surrender is a mesmerizing psychological thriller from extraordinary novelist Sonya Hartnett.

Review:

"The Australian Hartnett writes beautifully and well, her prose often bordering on the poetic. Yet it is a gruesome, grim, painful story suitable only for mature readers." Children's Literature

Review:

"[B]eautiful, often oblique, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately rewarding deeply layered prose that will attract readers who enjoy a challenge like moths to a flame." VOYA

Review:

"Sophisticated young readers will be awed by the delicate, measured, heartbreaking portrait that emerges." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"By oscillating time, creating resonance through the play of Gabriel's and Finnigan's voices, and by quietly stoking the pace, Hartnett leads the reader to an explosive climax and a heartbreaking understanding of a tortured human psyche." Horn Book Magazine

Review:

"Given its complex vocabulary, troubling characters, and grim content, this is a book for older teens willing to experience some of humanity's bleaker aspects." Booklist

OH I love this book I read it in the 8th grade, but I have a high-schooler reading level, I'm now in the 9th and plan on reading it again and again I loved this book so much, it was complicated but with much thought it became the *too wonderful for words* book I ever read! It made me feel so close to Gabriel in it! OH I LOVED IT!
