Latino Truck Driver Trade: Sex and HIV in Central America Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

What do truckers do about their sexual needs on the road? This startling and unique study examines the on-the-road sex lives of Central American truck drivers. It takes a quantitative and qualitative look at the extent of homosexuality, prostitution, drug use, and vulnerability to HIV infection among these men who operate in a strangely unique sexual culture. Latino Truck Driver Trade: Sex and HIV in Central America documents the extent of their sexual activities with both men and women as well as drug use and prostitution among this population. Honest and revealing, this valuable book uncovers the incredible danger that truck drivers put themselves in by risking HIV infection and why Latin sexual culture does not always define men who participate in acts with other men as homosexual. Brandon Reich, January 20, 2007 (view all comments by Brandon Reich)
Schifter takes the reader on an odyssey through the sexual lives of truck drivers in Costa Rica. He shares the stories of an ethnographer who has spent time traveling with truck drivers, meeting their wives and families, being forcibly seduced in their cabs, and engaging in the machismo discourse of not talking about the sex, afterwards, that straight men are having with anyone willing to bottom for them.

In producing a work that doesn't blink at the reality of the sexual world of Latino truck drivers, Shifter confounds all of our stereotypes. For instance, straight men with families who won't engage in oral or anal sex with their wives, engage in that forbidden sex with men on the road, keeping their wives "pure" for when they return home to them. The sexual world of these truck drivers exists at the nexus where religion, social mores, drugs, prostitution, loneliness, machismo and the sanctity of the home meet in an explosion of social confusion and sexual lust. As usual, Shifter excels at describing this nexus clearly with abundant examples.

In the end, Schifter asks more questions than he answers; but that is to be expected from such an accurate reflection of the sexual and social realties of his subjects. This insightful work is very approachable, full of excellent examples and clear analysis by the author, and should be of interest to most readers. You're sure to enjoy these travels with Schifter breaking down stereotypes of straight, Latino truck drivers.
