As a Kamba woman who grew up in rural Kenya and received education in the cities of North America, the author presents individual women's stories from an insider's perspective. The women's struggles to provide educational opportunities to their children draw attention to gender and power issues that limit women's participation in the public sphere. The author teaches in the Department of Educational Foundations and Specialization at the College of Charleston.
