Ocean Resources Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

Over two dozen papers, most by contributors from the US and UK, consider the resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone, that part of the ocean lying within 200 miles of land, and therefore subject to the local terrestrial government. One chapter surveys the legal aspects, emphasizing that the indiscriminate dumping and overexploitation by developed countries will have to change, and less fortunate countries will have to be convinced not to follow in our disastrous (but lucrative) footsteps. Subsequent papers survey methods for mapping and assessing the potential of EEZ's, and for exploiting such resources as minerals, energy, fish, and the space itself. Three final papers discuss measuring and assessing the environmental impact.
