Basic & Applied Aspects of Seed Biologyby R. H. Ellis
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:The Fifth International Workshop on Seeds was held at the University of Reading, UK, from 10 to 15 September, 1995. Some 230 seed scientists, from a wide range of disciplines (botanists, biochemists, ecologists, agriculturalists, foresters, and commercial seedsmen), from 31 countries (Europe, the Americas, and Asia) participated in the workshop. A large number of oral and poster presentations was made during the workshop and we are pleased to publish so many of them in these Proceedings. The papers herein are listed by the sessions in which they were presented but, as is often the case, many papers cover a broader range of topics than the session titles imply. For seed physiologists, ecologists, and technologists, this book collates much of the current research on seeds.
Book News Annotation:Botanists, biochemists, ecologists, agriculturalists, foresters, and
representatives from the commercial seed industry contribute 90
papers collating much of the current research on seeds of interest to
seed physiologists, ecologists, and technologists. They cover the
natural and artificial development and desiccation tolerance of
seeds, dormancy, germination and vigor, ecophysiology, and storage
and conservation. A sampling of specific concerns turns up the
behavior of membranes and proteins during natural seed aging, seed
germination in composites inhabiting fire-prone Mediterranean
ecosystems, the flow cytometric analysis of sugar-beet seeds that
differ in vigor, the hydrotime concept in germination and dormancy,
natural far-red irradiation and the persistence of weed seed in the
soil, patenting in the seed world, and the maternal effect on the
yield and quality of Callistephus chinensis seed. No index.
