Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Mack and Zack are getting ready for Christmas — hanging up their smelly socks and blistertoe, decorating their dead pine tree, making poisonberry pies.

Here, in the rollicking rhyme of Laura Leuck and the gruesomely silly illustrations of Gris Grimly, is a truly memorable Christmas tale. Mack and Zack may be monsters, but their excitement is the same as that of children the world around. Come join the celebrations in Monster Town!

Review:

"With a bit of a nod to Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Leuck's (My Monster Mama Loves Me So) lively holiday spookfest focuses on two monster boys' anticipation of 'gross and grisly Christmas toys,' delivered by a fat dragon-riding sprite with a bite: Santa Claws. As his name suggests, Grimly (Boris and Bella) is ready to trip the light fangtastic with breezy yet somber-hued watercolor-and-ink scenes of all manner of monsters and their icky and humorous accoutrements, from 'crusty cookies topped with flies' to visions of 'boogerplums' dancing through their heads. Ages 4-8." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

"[A] mischievously macabre Christmas story....[W]eirdly edgy but not too terribly scary....A tasty Christmas treat for kids who like their humor gross and their satires snappy." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"The rhyming text is clever and amusing but it falls a bit flat....[O]lder kids will love Grimly's quirky, Tim Burtonesque style art. An alternative for those who like a bizarre twist on a traditional tale." Library Journal
