Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A few years ago, Joyce Tenneson began a series of dramatic, up-close portraits of women, all taken with Polaroid's remarkable 20 x 24-inch camera. These striking images are reminiscent of Tenneson's earlier work (Transformations and Illuminations) in their haunting, dreamlike qualities. However, these striking portraits of the female figure, often partially nude, draped in fabric, with unusual headdresses or objects in their arms, illuminated by eerie light, are unforgettable and a bold departure from her earlier work. We think that this book will appeal not only to Tenneson's loyal fans — the photographic, feminist, and spiritual market — but also to a more general audience, capitalizing on her increasing visibility in the fashion field.

Last fall Tenneson shot a major campaign for Estee Lauder, Magique — which is now featured in most fashion magazines. Estee Lauder discovered her work by seeing our book Illuminations. With a foot in both the fine arts and fashion/advertising field, Tenneson is a much admired photographer with an unmistakable style.

Description:

This dramatic and compelling new book is reminiscent of Tenneson's earlier work of the human figure. Yet it is also a bold departure as Tenneson's palette has changed from monochromatic color to luminous dark browns and blacks.

As I turned each page I found myself being drawn in a little bit more with each picture I studied. The emotional appeal of each one offers its own personal diary in a way (visually). Although all of the pictures were intriguing, the one I was captivated most by was of Nina from Russia. The lighting concept is reproduced in a warm brown, with hints of black to compliment the wrap on her body. She seems very relaxed, yet sophisticated as she holds her leg to the side of her body. It brought me into her world...I was absolutely fascinated by the emotional expression on her face. It revealed so much yet still retained this strong sense of mystery on who this woman is, and what her life might be like. Overall each picture holds a brilliant and emotional complexity that Tenneson captures incredibly will.

One of the best works of this wonderful photographer was the black and white Contrejour's editorial book "Photographs", published around 1983-84.
From them I like to call Joyce Tenneson, "The Queen of the high-key"!!.
This is her colorful experience!. Great work!
