I've found that the most useful book for a mourner and his/her spouse to read after the demise of a loved one is Rabbi Maurice Lamm's "The Jewish Way in Death and Mourning". Dr. Lamm clearly explains the relevenat laws, customs, and their rationale. Masterfully and compassionately, he addresses almost every question or issue that may arise from the time of death through the entire year of mourning. A bibliography and an index enhances the book's usefulnes.
