Simon
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Reproductive Biology and Early Life History of Fishes in the Ohio River Drainage is an extensive treatise on early life histories of the freshwater fishes of North America. It provides a systematic approach to the study of early life histories of the fishes in this region. Each volume contains distinguishing characteristics and a pictorial guide to families of fishes in the Drainage. This series provides information on spawning habitat requirements, reproductive behavior, and ecological relationships during the first few months of life. Volume 4 addresses the developmental and morphological issues of Perch, Pikeperch, and Darters. Book News Annotation:Six species of fish in the Ohio River drainage are currently listed
as endangered, five are listed as threatened, and another 18 are
candidates for listing. Knowledge of the early life stages of fish is
critical for the effective monitoring and management of these and
other fish. Unfortunately, a lack of basic knowledge has prevented
biologists from simple identification of these organisms in their
juvenile stages. This book attempts to help fill that gap, with
detailed information on members of the family Percidae present in the
Ohio River drainage. Each entry lists, where known, the range,
distribution, occurrence, spawning, eggs, development, and ecology of
early life stages. Extensive illustrations include maps of ranges and
careful drawings of juvenile fish.
