This two-volume work provides the first definitive scientific treatment of the rapidly growing field of bioactive implant materials. Contributions to each volume include introductory review chapters combined with recent experimental findings presented at the World Biomaterials Congress in Kyoto, Japan in April, 1988. The nearly 100 chapters include contributions from 11 countries and are representative of the explosive growth of science and clinical applications of this new field.

The first of two volumes (see following entry) providing current information on ceramic materials that bond with living bone, and even soft tissue at times. The topics include surface reactivity in vitro and in vivo, the reactions of various cells to bioactive ceramics, the mechanism of bonding to the bone tissue and to the soft tissue, the mechanical and biological characters of their composites with metals or polymers, and preliminary results of clinical applications in the fields of orthopedic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, dental surgery, and otolaryngosurgery.
