For me, there's a weird, unfathomable gulf — I almost wrote gulp — between the completion of a novel and its publication. Some days this duration feels interminable, as though the book has... Continue »

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Our consumption patterns are threatening to outstrip Earth's ability to support humanity and other species. A sustainable future will require sweeping changes in public behavior. While conventional marketing can help create public awareness, social marketing identifies and overcomes barriers to long-lasting behavior change. This ground-breaking book is the primary resource for the emerging new field of community-based social marketing, and an invaluable guide for anyone involved in designing public education programs with the goal of promoting sustainable behavior, from recycling and energy efficiency, to alternative transportation.

Dr. McKenzie-Mohris a professor of social psychology and community-based marketing at St. Thomas University in New Brunswick. Dr. William Smithis the Executive Vice President at the Academy for Educational Development in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Doug McKenzie Mohr’s book has rapidly become a standard reference for those Environmental Educators who embrace change and measurement of results in their field. This detailed, yet concise, handbook provides case studies as examples to help the extension specialist develop sound, sustainable community environmental education programs. Developed around community based social marketing (his website is www.cbsm.com), the mechanisms this book advocates will provide not-for-profits the background to be successful with their fundraising as their proposals will be objective results-based not subjective. To my knowledge Mohr’s book is used by the British Columbia Ministry of Environment to determine whether environmental education programs will move forward. Mohr also provides very thorough training workshops to augment his book. As a Canadian Silver Environmental Learning Award winning educator, I thoroughly recommend this handbook as a staple in any environmental library.
