Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Setting the scene with America's traditional folk of the early '60s, this book describes the sea of change that began in 1964 when the social consciousness of folk met the energy of rock. It concentrates on 1964-66, when the best, most popular, and most controversial folk-rock was created. The book explores the dizzyingly fast cross-fertilization of such giants as The Beatles, The Byrds, and Dylan; the passionate conflicts between folk devotees and folk-rockers; the sudden frenzy of the media; and the unforgettable music that was born. Turn Turn Turn also examines how folk-rock continued to influence late '60s psychedelic rock, country-rock and the British scene, as well as its gradual, partial transformation into the singer-songwriter movement. Based on first-hand interviews with such visionaries as Roger McGuinn, Judy Collins, Donovan, John Sebastian, Arlo Guthrie, Janis Ian and dozens of others.

Synopsis:

A portrait of folk rock cites its role as a vehicle for musical and social change, chronicling its evolution in the 1960s while profiling its major contributors and milestones, such as Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel, the Newport Folk Festival, and Woodstock. Original.

Synopsis:

Taking its title from a folk song that became a folk-rock hit, "Turn! Turn! Turn! "chronicles the evolution in the 1960s of a new form of popular music that blended poetic lyricism, social awareness, and rock and roll rebellion, revealing how a generation found its voice and changed popular music and culture forever. I like this book a lot. I'm not a big reader of music history, but this caught my eye and I've hardly been able to put it down. Unterberger is clearly passionate about his subject(s), and his passion shines through in his writing. He's got a million stories from a million sources, mostly the lesser-knowns of the folk and folk-rock scene in the 60s, from Al Kooper to Janis Ian to Mimi Farina to Chris Hillman and on and on and on. It's thorough and fascinating.
