Published in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Flight: A Celebration of 100 Years in Art and Literature is a creative testament to the inspiration which first drove man to reach for the sky and ultimately succeeded in landing him on the moon. As such, Flight tells its story directly through artwork and words inspired by man?s fearless attempts to tame the wind.

Organized chronologically and thematically, Flight begins with the earliest invention of the airplane; continues with its uses in transport and war; and concludes with the breathtaking explorations into outer space. Illuminating each stage are selections from a stunning array of writers — from the worlds of science fiction, poetry, aviation, literature, science, and politics — including Robert Frost, Chuck Yaeger, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, John F. Kennedy, Walter Cronkite, and Ray Bradbury. The artists represented range the spectrum of twentieth-century art, from Robert Rauschenberg, Fernand Leger, and Pablo Picasso to Roy Lichtenstein, Norman Rockwell, and Annie Leibovitz.

Anne Collins Goodyear is the Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C.

Roger Launius is a member of the Division of Space History at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. He has written or edited a number of books on aerospace history, including Imagining Space: Achievements, Predictions, Possibilities, 1950?2050 and NASA & The Exploration of Space.

Anthony Springer is NASA's representative for Centennial of Flight activities and the Alliance Development Manager for the Office of Aerospace Technology.

Bertram Ulrich is Curator of the NASA Art Program and is also responsible for NASA's visual identity for the Office of Public Affairs. He co-authored a book with Roger Launius on the NASA Art Program entitled NASA & The Exploration of Space.
