Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Russell and Shawn call themselves the PS Brothers: P is for poop, S is for scoop, and Brothers is because theyre best friends. Scooping poop is the fastest way to earn money to buy a puppy. These two are crazy about dogs. And theyre sure that once their puppy grows into a tough dog, no one will ever pick on them for being weak or poor again. Unfortunately, getting a puppy is not that easy. Russell and Shawn dont count on uncovering a dog-fighting ringand that can bust apart a dream faster than a dog can sniff out a bone.
But doing the right thing might still get them what they wantand maybe even more.

Review:

"Creech has created a poignant, funny picture of a child's encounter with the power of poetry. Readers may have a similar experience because all of the selections mentioned in the story are included at the end. This book is a tiny treasure." Lee Bock, School Library Journal

Review:

"Teachers will take this story to heart, recognizing Miss Stretchberry's skilled and graceful teaching and Jack's subtle emotional growth both as a person and a writer. This really special triumph is bound to be widely discussed by teachers and writers, and widely esteemed by Creech's devoted readers." Kirkus Reviews

With a fresh, simple style, acclaimed author Creech tells a story with enormous heart. Written as a series of free-verse poems, "Love That Dog" shows how one boy finds his own voice with the help of a teacher, a writer, a pencil, some yellow paper, and, of course, a dog. Illustrations.

About the Author

Known for writing with a classic voice and unique style, Sharon Creech is the best-selling author of the Newbery Medal winnerWalk Two Moons, and the Newbery Honor BookThe Wanderer. She is also the first American in history to be awarded the CILIP Carnegie Medal forRuby Holler. Her other works include the novelsLove That Dog, Bloomability, Absolutely Normal Chaos, Chasing Redbird, and Pleasing the Ghost, and two picture books: A Fine, Fine School and Fishing in the Air. These stories are often centered around life, love, and relationships — especially family relationships. Ms. Creech's first novel for children,Absolutely Normal Chaos, was based on her own "rowdy and noisy" family. Growing up in a big family in Cleveland, Ohio, helped Ms. Creech learn to tell stories that wouldn't be forgotten in all of the commotion: "I learned to exaggerate and embellish, because if you didn't, your story was drowned out by someone else's more exciting one."

With a knack for storytelling and love of reading, a young Ms. Creech aspired to become a novelist: "To be able to create other worlds, to be able to explore mystery and myth — I couldn't imagine a better way to live. . .except perhaps to be a teacher, because teachers got to handle books all day long." In college, Ms. Creech took her first writing courses and attended writing workshops. This renewed her enthusiasm for becoming a novelist. Following her studies in college and graduate school, Ms. Creech worked as an editorial assistant before deciding to become a teacher overseas. Now, after spending eighteen years teaching and writing in Europe, she and her husband have returned to the United States to live.

A sweet, fast read, great for kids who don't think they like poetry.
