Some of the information may be slightly out of date compared to the more recent edition, but I believe that this book is generally considered to be the best introduction to home brewing methods available, and I've found it to be much better than other similar books. Plus it has some really great 80's style photos and graphics that must have been done on first or second generation Macintosh computers. Rad!
