Born in 1915, Hiroshima Kazuo is the last professional basketmaker in the mountainous Hinokage region on the Japanese island of Kyushu. This beautifully illustrated book celebrates the life work of this master bamboo craftsman, integrating the absorbing story of his 64-year career with a chronicle of his life and times. The over 100 duotone photographs present a comprehensive collection of his baskets, now held at the Smithsonian Institute, as well as basketry tools and materials, scenes of Hinokage, and details about village life.
